UNO Spider primarily is a group of six individuals working within the University's Information Technology Services (ITS) department. The head of the department, John Fiene, brought these people together to work on security issues related to technology. These individuals are:
Bret Blackman
Bret started working part-time at UNO in 1996 in the Student Enrollment Services office and became full time in 1999. Responsibilities included desktop support, system administration, web application development and Student Information System (SIS) support and security. He joined ITS in 2003 as Director of Administrative Information Services. His staff has responsibilities for web application development, website design, system integration, Data Warehousing, Business Intelligence and support/enhancement of SIS and related systems such as E-BRUNO. A new responsibility added to Bret's position is Director of Information Assurance. In this role, his responsibilities include Information Assurance strategic direction, team leadership and enabling of team members to ensure success. Bret is a UNO graduate, receiving his B.S. in MIS in 2001.
Aaron Murray
Aaron has worked for ITS since 1994 when he started out as a part-time student worker in the Data Communications area. He became full-time three years later, gradually transitioning from the administrator of the department's only Novell file server to being the network administrator for the entire campus. Because of his experience in both these fields, ITS made Aaron an Information Security Officer in charge of securing the transmission and storage of data over the University's network and systems. Aaron is a graduate of the University's Electronics Engineering program, and is currently working his way towards a Master's Degree in Public Administration.
Dan Kenny
In 1993, Dan started working full time for UNO as a Student Information Systems (SIS) programmer/analyst supporting Student Records. His primary duties were implementing UNO's telephone registration system (BRUNO), then implementing UNO's web-based registration system (E-BRUNO). In 1996, Dan joined the Registrar's Office and was the SIS securitiy officer, in addition the to primary technical support/web-based programming for Student Records. In 2001, he returned to Information Technology Services as a senior systems anaylst and was the lead for integrating SIS enrollments/associations into the new web-based course authoring system, Blackboard. Later in 2004, Dan became a senior web architect, with primary responsibilities of enterprise integration, business intelligence and web-based student records/registration support. More recently, his duties have been expanded to include application development security. Dan likes code in everything from JCL to PHP, and enjoys retro-computing with Hercules, an IBM S/370 emulator that runs on Linux and WIndows....(google for "Turnkey MVS" if you want your own personal mainframe on your desktop :)
Matt Galardi
Matt Galardi, Manager of Client Services, Information technology services. Matt's ITS duties include hardware and software contracts for the university, Management of ITS Customer Services, ITS User labs and ITS Outreach labs. Matt's spent his first 17 years at UNO working in Facilities Management as their System Administrator. The helping hand of Facilities Management is spread across the breadth of the campus. This assisted Matt in developing a strong knowledge base of the workings of the campus community, which aides in his role of Client Services Manager. His role in the IA team covers all daily use devices... workstations, printers, cell phones, pdas, portable media and to provide the end user information and procedures in keeping these devices secure from malicious attacks. Matt has been with UNO for twenty-three years.
Miun Criffield
Miun has been with the University since 1997. The data security member of the team, she recently began working for ITS as its database architect. Prior to this she worked for ITS as a systems administrator, maintaining UNO's web server, its mailing list server and various other Linux servers in the ITS Data Center.
Stephen McIntyre
A veteran of ten years at the University, Stephen's spent most of that time serving as the ITS Operations Manager. Recently he's changed job duties, and has taken on two different roles within the department of ITS: he works primarily as a web applications developer, and partly as a member of ITS's new Spider security team. His role in that team includes managing intiatives in disaster recovery as well as physical security both of ITS personnel and ITS hardware. When he's not tending to either of these, he's pulling his hair out trying to get his code to work.
