NU ID
WHAT is an NU ID?
The NU ID (pronounced "en you eye dee") is a Nebraska University-wide unique
identifier which is managed through a central identity management service.
It accurately and reliably establishes an internally generated, non-Social
Security Number (SSN) the University can use as an identifier for people
associated with the Nebraska University (NU) system. This effort is for
compliance with the policies of the University Information Security Plan
(N.U. President Executive Memorandum 26).
The University uses this NU identifier to conduct business at UNO and it appears on the new MavCard ID card. UNO shares this number with the other NU campuses in the University system and with administrative units. This means that inter-campus students attending other campuses, such as UNL or UNK, will have the same NU no matter where they go.
Ack! Not another ID number to memorize?
The NU ID is, unfortunately, a new ID number, which bears no relevance to anything unconnected to the Nebraska University system. But this is a GOOD thing! Increasingly, colleges and universities have become favorite targets of data hackers for identity theft. There has been an explosion in data disclosures (either through compromised systems or through staff negligence) in the higher education sector over the past several years. This is due in large part to the dependence on Social Security Numbers as identifiers for record-keeping in the field of education.
Ok, what does this mean?
This means that students, faculty and staff get a new ID card (MavCard) with their NU ID numbers printed on the card. It means that students no longer use their Social Security Numbers (SSN) to log onto E-BRUNO for enrollment services. It means that faculty no longer use their SSNs to log onto to E-BRUNO for grading. It means that the University no longer ties SSNs to class lists or to course files.
It means that administrative units with SIS console access will see the NU ID on name lookups, the action line, the course listings and the faculty workload screens.
It does NOT, however, replace the UNO Net ID for Blackboard or Lotus Notes, nor the Personnel Number for the personnel system (SAP), nor the web-based Employee Self-Service (ESS).
NU ID also does not replace SSN in the Student Information System (SIS). SSNs instead are removed from the display and in routine use, where the vast majority of the exposure vulnerability exists.
How long will the NU ID be used?
The University will use your NU ID as long as you are connected to the Nebraska University system. In record keeping terms, that means forever. It will not be re-issued to another individual, and it will continue to be the ID you will need for ordering transcripts over the web and other services.
If you graduate, then come back for graduate school, you will use the same NU ID. If you terminate employment, then later attend classes at UNL, you will use the same NU ID. If you retire at one campus, then decide to volunteer your time at another campus, you will use the same NU ID.
The UNO Cybersecurity Team is confident this move to the NU ID will continue to advance the campus effort to ensure that Securing Personal Information and Data is Everyone's Responsibility.
What is a MavCard?
The MavCard is the official identification card of the University of Nebraska at Omaha. You use your MavCard to access many services on campus, including entrance into the HPER building and checking books out at the Library. You also can use the card as a debit card for making purchases across campus.
The majority of computer labs across the campus use the MavCard for printing services. Select vending machines across campus, the Bookstore, the Convenience Store, the Maverick Buffet, & the PKI Food Cart also utilize the card.
Students enrolled at the University may receive their ID card by coming to the MavCard Services Office and presenting photo identification. Students attending new student orientation will receive their ID card the day of their orientation after presenting photo identification. Students who do not attend orientation can go to the MavCard Services Office to obtain their card after presenting photo identification.
UNO NetIDentification
Your UNO NetID is your personal identification for using many UNO online services. Every student, faculty and staff member has a UNO NetID, which is composed of a username and password. Accounts using the UNO NetID are automatically generated after a student has enrolled for at least one course or has attended student orientation, or after faculty/staff have been hired, or Active Faculty are listed in the faculty workload of SIS as the instructor of record. Your UNO NetID will allow you access to Mymail, MyUNO (Blackboard), MyFolder (Personal file storage) and MyWeb. Therefore you need only one account and one password to gain access to all "My" systems.
